The first free ascent was completed in 1960 by none other than Royal Robins and P. Ament.

This is one of the most popular routes in Eldo and for a good reason. It is long, not too sustained, and a beautiful direct line.

As you climb through history and in many cases, clip that history, wonder about how wild it would have been to be climbing in this canyon in 1960.

Let’s not dwell too much on the past, there is still a beautiful climb to ascend!

PREPARATIONS FOR THE YELLOW SPUR

Technical Experience

General multi-pitch climbing experience is required. As a prerequisite, guests should either, sign-up for an additional moderate route in Eldo with one of our team members before this climb, or be able to provide a resume and guide reference of routes comparable in difficulty. As prep our guides will review the skills needed to ascend this climb.

Fitness

General fitness and foundational climbing fitness are required. Guests should have confidence and be able to climb routes in the mid 5.11’s in a gym without falling. Climbing several routes at the 5.10 grade outdoors is recommended.
